Event Information

Join French Engineers in BC for the first event of the year! We organize events to allow French speaking engineers and scientists living in BC to get to know each other and to share experience and knowledge on various fields. It is also a good opportunity for English speaking engineers to practice their French and meet French speakers in their industry.

For this event, Dominik Desbois, owner of Spin Society Cycling Studio Inc., has nicely accepted the invitation to give a presentation on entrepreneurship and career change.

Dominik Desbois grew up in the Cantons-de-l’Est at the South-East of Québec, and then moved to Montréal when he was 21 years old to continue his academic career. Originally aiming to join a Physiotherapy Bachelor Program driven by his passion for sports, he was convinced by a friend to enrol in a Civil Engineering Program. He successfully graduated from McGill to start his exciting career in engineering. However, after 5 years in the consulting industry, Dominik decided to analyse his situation and his professional development. As interesting as a civil engineering position can be, he aspired to something different. Without specific career development objective in mind, his professional skills development goals led him to leave the consulting industry to complete a full time MBA Program in 2013. The following return in the consulting industry was short, as an idea - a dream buried for a long time - was growing in his mind. One year was necessary to create his proper company in the sport area. Dominik has recently opened a « spinning » centre in downtown Vancouver and will share with you his experience. He will discuss the following topics:

What brought him to leave his engineering position to start his entrepreneurship adventure?
How his engineering background was a helpful advantage in the process of developing his business? How valuable was the MBA?
What are the challenges and myths of entrepreneurship?
What would he have done differently?
What are the different steps to follow to start a company?
Does French language help in business in Vancouver?

You can come as soon as 6:30PM to start mingling and ordering drinks and/or food. The presentation will start at 7:00PM and will last about 15 to 20 minutes. Then our traditional social mixer can last all night long.

Nous organisons des événements pour permettre aux ingénieurs et scientifiques francophones habitant en BC de se rencontrer et de partager des expériences et connaissances dans divers domaines. C’est également L’occasion pour les ingénieurs anglophones de venir pratiquer leur français et rencontrer des francophones dans leur industrie.

Dominik Desbois a grandi dans les Cantons-de-l’Est au Sud-Est du Québec, puis déménagé à Montréal à l’âge de 21 ans pour poursuivre ses études post collégiales. Parti avec l’intention de s’inscrire au baccalauréat en physiothérapie due à son amour pour le monde du sport, il fut finalement convaincu par un ami de le suivre en génie civil. Après avoir complété son programme à McGill avec succès, une carrière excitante dans le génie s’offrait à lui. Cependant, après 5 ans dans l’industrie du génie conseil, Dominik ressentit un besoin de changement et commença à réfléchir à son avenir. Sans objectif spécifique de carrière, il décida de compléter un MBA à temps plein en 2013 afin d’acquérir de nouveaux outils et connaissances. Il retourna temporairement dans une boite de génie conseil alors qu’une nouvelle idée émergeait dans son esprit. Pendant un an, il travailla dur pour faire de cette idée une réalité. C’est ainsi que Dominik a récemment ouvert son propre centre de « spinning » dans le centre-ville de Vancouver et va nous faire partager son expérience. Il abordera les points suivants :

Qu’est ce qui l’a poussé à quitter sa position d’ingénieur pour se lancer dans l’entreprenariat ?
En quoi son background d’ingénieur l’a aidé à monter sa boite? Qu’a apporté le MBA?
Quels sont les challenges, les mythes, de l’entreprenariat?
Quelles sont les choses qu’il aurait faites différemment?
Quelles sont les étapes pour créer une entreprise?
Le français est-il bénéfique pour le business à Vancouver?

Vous êtes les bienvenus dès 18h30 pour commencer à faire connaissance et commander boisson et/ou nourriture. La présentation commencera à 19h00 et durera environ 15 à 20 minutes. Ensuite, nous pouvons comme à notre habitude profiter du reste de la soirée.
