Women Making a Difference

In honour of International Women's Day on March 8th, 2012 – NetworkinginVan is dedicating the month of March to Women Making a Difference. Follow our list on twitter as it grows!

Each day we will feature one fabulous and fierce female who is making a difference in her community – supporting women, helping mentor young women, creating change and empowering all women to reach their highest potential.

Friday, March 30th

Name + title: Dr. Wendy Lisogar-Cocchia (LL.D. Hon)
Chief Executive Officer, Century Plaza Hotel & Absolute Spa Group;
Chair, Vancouver Board of Trade 2012

Why it’s important to support women: “Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, working together is success” – Henry Ford.  It is important to support other women but it is also important for us to support men, because truly we are all in this together. We must continue to create positive change and success for future women in the business community

Why Wendy is an inspiration to us: Twenty-five years ago my father was invited to participate in an industry golf tournament and unfortunately fell ill.  I happily volunteered to take his place, only to be told by the event coordinator that I wasn’t allowed to play due to the fact that I was a woman.  This sparked a great idea of the Women’s Media Golf Classic.  Twenty-five years later, this event is still going strong celebrating the 25th annual Silver Jubilee tournament on June 6th, 2012.  This event helped to change the mindset that golf was specifically a men’s game and introduced some excellent golfers to Vancouver… they just so happened to be female.  Although the tournament is female orientated, the gala evening includes both men and women coming together in support of various children’s charities. This is a perfect example of how the business world has significantly changed over the past 25 years.

One of the other ways I support women, is to connect with them through various programs and events.  Recently I addressed the FWE in Vancouver at their January KPMG event.  It was remarkable to meet and learn from women in different industries, and their unified motivation for success in the economy and community.

I believe it is extremely important to support a variety of organizations, inclusive of all individuals. By supporting various programs and people in the community, we continue to help improve the quality of lives, and in actuality, improve the community as a whole.

Words to live by: “People will forget what you say, people will forget what you do… but people will NEVER forget the way you make them feel.” – A quote often referred to by my mentor, Dr. Peter Legge (LL.D. Hon.)
