Event Information

IRAP, NSERC, SR&ED, YEP, WINN, MITACS, BCIP – the Government of Canada offers many programs to support businesses with funding, expertise and other resources. Attend this session to learn what these programs offer, which programs are a fit for your company, and what you can expect when applying for funding.

The following three experts in government funding programs will inform you on these programs.

Rob McGarry, Advisor, National Research Council of Canada
Rob is an electrical engineer from McGill University, and has more than 20 years experience in successful start-up/exit cycles in the wireless and mobile services industry. He now spends his time as part of the government’s new Concierge Service connecting companies to relevant innovation/funding programs available from all levels of government and industry partners. Rob will provide us with a high level overview of some key government programs available and how to access them and more.

Dr. Wilson Lau, P.Eng. Research and Technology Manager, CRA SR&ED Division
Wilson received his bachelor degree in civil engineering from University of Windsor and his Ph.D. degree in Wood Science from University of British Columbia. He has worked for CRA’s SR&ED division for more than 14 years, helping more than 500 companies in engineering related fields. Wilson will provide us with an overview of the SR&ED (Scientific Research and Experimental Development Tax Credit Program) program and tips on how to apply this Canada’s largest single source of funding program for industrial R&D. In 2011 alone, the program provided $3.6 billion in federal investment tax credits to over 23,000 Canadian companies.

Dr. Laurence Meadows, Team Lead & Director of Business Development, Mitacs
Laurence received his B.A. in Biochemistry from Oxford University and his Ph.D. from McGill University (Department of Neurology & Neurosurgery). He subsequently spent 4 years as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Michigan (Department of Pharmacology) where he continued his research before joining Mitacs in February, 2006 as a Business Development Director at their Vancouver office. Laurence is currently the Team Lead of the Mitacs Western Canada business development group and his responsibilities include working closely with local industry and academic researchers to further support applied research collaborations and graduate student and Post-Doctoral Fellow training.

Mitacs is a non-profit, national research organization that manages and funds research and training programs for undergraduate, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in partnership with universities, industry and government in Canada.
