It’s hard not to forget that Valentine’s Day isn’t just a day for lovers, it can also be a day to show appreciation for those in your personal and professional life (remember sending all those ‘friendly’ Valentine’s in the 3rd grade?).
But, particularly in the workplace, you want to be very careful that this ‘appreciation’ isn’t’ taken as a declaration of hidden love… as you can imagine, this could be quite awkward.
So here are three safe ways to show your employees, colleagues, or even your manager that their guidance, hard work, or willingness to join you for 3pm after work cocktails on a Friday is appreciated:
So I know it’s not the most original gift, but believe me, when the person you gave a $10 Starbucks gift card to is having the Monday morning from hell and is in desperate need of a caffeine hit before they walk in late to an important meeting, they are going to be very grateful for that quick swipe rather than the extra 5 minutes needed to dig through their bag for change or credit cards. To make this small gesture a little more meaningful, try matching the gift cards to the giftees tastes. Do they love books? Get them a card for the local bookstore chain, or if e-books are more their thing, you can easily purchase gift cards through Amazon.com.
Organize an all staff ‘Share the Love’ party
Involving the whole team at once, dramatically lowers the risk of the appreciation message being misconstrued (although if Harry in collections decides to bring a heart shape cookie for Rose in marketing, you can’t be held accountable for the results). Try getting everyone to bring a pink themed dish or food item (cookies, cranberry juice, watermelon) and let the love flow!
Cupid’s Gift Drop
Can’t tear the entire team away from their desks for an all staff gathering? Then grab a couple of co-workers to help you with a ‘Cupid’s Gift Drop’. Get little packets of heart candies, heart shaped cookies, or even some Hershey’s Kisses and leave a little gift on each employees desk. It’s a nice little reminder that they are appreciated, and they’ll thank you for the sugar hit during that 3pm energy crash.
