Last night I attended my very first networking event: YES! Vancouver’s 7th Annual Signature Event held at the indie-charming Ascot Lounge. Being new at this I thought the best way to ease into the world of networking and stretch my fawn legs would be at an event that offers a free cocktail (a delicious smoked whiskey) and a plethora of silent auction items. I was right about the cocktail and wrong about feeling afraid. The women who form the board of YES! Vancouver as well as their current and potential members were welcoming, friendly, and sophisticated. They are the type of women you want to get to know and certainly hope to work hard to become. Many of them hold full-time executive positions while raising children at home and yet still find the time to dress fabulously and have a little fun on a Wednesday night. These are the women of the future and this is why these events are so important for women looking for fresh opportunities in business and most importantly, friendship.
For those that don’t know what YES! Vancouver is, besides having an attention-grabbing name, they also have an enticing slogan: “Where Business and Philanthropy meet in style.” Could there be a more beautiful thing than combining fashion and philanthropy? Self-described, YES! Vancouver is a group of professional women who enjoy fun and stylish networking events that make a difference. All funds raised by YES! directly support Dress for Success Vancouver, an international charity that helps low and no income women to transition into the workforce by providing professional attire and career support. YES! hosts events through out the year in an attempt to connect women from all professions to each other in a relaxed atmosphere. Last night, for the first time ever, they also invited men! So yes, it actually can get more beautiful.
One of the purposes of female networking and of this site in general, is to prove that business and friendship can be compatible. Not even because we are women, but especially because we are women. Throw the catty clichés aside and open your mind to the possibility that there are groups of successful women in Vancouver who are looking to help other women become just that. The event last night featured fun activities like a cocktail show, amazing silent auction items like a month’s pass at Barre Fitness, and incredible potential connections. I was even able to connect to fellow English majors that have overcome the stigma of our arts degree to become well-earned successes in marketing, real estate, and writing. Shakespeare would say bravo! So if you haven’t found the right networking group yet, don’t be shy, give YES! a chance.
