Last Thursday’s luncheon was a part of the WIL National Spotlight Speaker Series, showcasing female role models in business. This was one of those events you leave feeling empowered and inspired.
Emcee: Rita Rogers, Senior Manager, Events, Canucks Sport & Entertainment
Sandy Cimoroni, Senior Vice President, TD Waterhouse – Financial Planning.
Debbie Butt, Director of Communications & Brand – Rick Hansen Leadership Group
Andrea Raso Amer, Partner, Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP
Janet Wood, Executive Vice President, Maintenance Go-To-Market SAP
Each speaker shared pivotal moments in their career, with some key themes emerging:
In a room full of women who successfully manage to have careers, families, and multiple side interests (including triathlons!) – one looks around and wonders “how do they do it?”
Debbie describes life as a whole pie, of which, work is just a slice. Sandy reminded us that you can have it all, just not at the same time. We must make choices, and become comfortable in the fact that balance is not always going to be a reality in our busy lives.
You must trust your gut. Create your own experiences and learn about you. Self-awareness and recognizing what differentiates you from everyone else is key. Be true to yourself.
Never stop learning
Be an open vessel for learning. When you take a new role, ask yourself ‘what will I learn, how can I grow?’ Consider getting a mentor, and make sure you have sponsors – people around you who will endorse you. Get a mentor outside of your current organization, who can shed light on areas you most want to improve.
Proceeds from the luncheon benefited the WIL Mentorship Program. For more information on how to apply or get involved in this great program, click here.
