Networking can take many forms, but one many of us forget about is networking within our own industry. Industry-specific networking is a great way to upgrade your skills, learn about new innovations in tools or technology, and foster collaborative relationships that could enhance your business.
I’ll be attending Event Camp Vancouver November 4 – 6 for these very reasons. In the event industry, we create meaningful opportunities for engagement for our clients every day, but often don’t make the best use of opportunities to engage with our industry colleagues. We often talk about collaborating with fellow industry professionals, but what does this really mean? How can we leverage our industry-specific relationships and indeed, our own expertise to create business opportunities for ourselves that did not exist before?
Some of the ways this could be achieved are:
- Introduce new technology such as gaming or social media to your traditional business model.
- Consult with a “green” expert to incorporate sustainable practices into your company or projects.
- Seek partnerships or sponsorships with innovative companies who can add value to your business model or client relationships.
These are just a few ideas to get the wheels turning – there are countless other ways you can seek to collaborate with industry colleagues who each bring something unique to the table.
Sometimes we fall into old ways of doing things without realizing it. How often do you hear colleagues say “ well that’s how we did it last year”? Challenge your team to throw out the old adage “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. Instead, if it’s working, take it apart, and figure out how to make it better, more efficient, more interesting, more valuable. Networking within your industry and learning from your colleagues is one of the best ways to remain innovative and create exciting opportunities in your business.
