5 Steps to Significant Success

According to the online Dictionary, “Success” (noun) is defined as:

1. achievement of intention
2. attainment of fame, wealth, or power
3. something that turns out well
4. somebody successful

Although the definition is clear, it leaves much to the imagination for how that outcome is to be accomplished. And therein lies one of the fundamental challenges in our attempt to achieve both business and personal success. We don’t have a crystal clear vision of what we want!

Invest time clearly identifying what success means to you; if you don’t, you may very well find yourself reaching for other people’s goals and your own success will remain elusive.

Here are some ideas to kick-start your thinking and help you achieve Success your own way:

Stand for something meaningful to you.
Your greatest success will come from your most passionate cause. Start by taking notice of the community or business problems that get under your skin and cause you to say “there has got to be a better way”. These are the ones that you care about the most, the problems that you have the drive to solve, and they need your attention because you are the only one who can solve them your way. Others may try, but only you can bring to life a solution that will get the results you want.

Have integrity. Do what is right, without compromise. Always.
When faced with difficult decisions, we all know “the right thing to do”. It is intuitive in us. We know what we wantvar link = document.getElementById(‘link2736');link.onclick = function(){document.location = link.getAttribute(‘href');} to do, but the “right” decision is often the more difficult decision to make. Doing what’s right is not always easy, but it is always the most fulfilling in the long-term. Short- term objectives and goals can sometimes affect the decisions we make, often for the worse. I once readvar link = document.getElementById(‘link2736');link.onclick = function(){document.location = link.getAttribute(‘href');} a quote that says: “Discipline is remembering what you want”. Never forget that short-
term gains are not always consistent with long-term goals.

Create a Vision with a Significant Purpose.
If you’re familiar with Mazlow’s hierarchy of needs, then you’re familiar with this concept already. Once our basic and essential needs are met, humans are driven to contribute to something greater than ourselves and leave a meaningful impact on the world. Every single one of us, without exception, wants to be remembered. Your business, more than any other platform, is your greatest opportunity to create real, lasting, and significant value to consumers today and to generations to come. Build something that makes a difference and your meaningful impact will
take care of itself.

Stretch outside your comfort zone. Step into your fear.
The reason you feel fear, unless it’s because of something life threatening, is because you care. You experience fear because you are fully invested in the outcome. You want to succeed! What if you fail? What if you don’t achieve the results you want? What if it doesn’t work? Although these are valid questions, you will never have the answers to them until you try. Once you actually get out there and try, you will be much clearer on what works, what doesn’t and what
opportunities you have to improve. When fear gets in the way, the only thing you have is fear and speculation. And you can’t build a business on those. As best-selling author Robin Sharma is known to say, “that which you most fear, is that which you must do.” And the funny thing about fear is, once you step into it, it’s not nearly as scary as you once thought.

Identify the success principles you will use to guide your decisions.

There are certain things that you believe you must DO to achieve success. There are also things that you believe you must BE to achieve success. What I’m talking about are the non- negotiables, not those things you believe you should be or do. Those are other people’s ideas. Your own ideas are the ones that will fuel your success, motivate you to action and drive you to improve. Write them down. Be clear on what they are. These are the fundamental success principles upon which your own personal success is dependent. Only you can achieve your own success, so you must be the one to define the principles upon which you will build it.

Good luck! May you reach greater heights, experience greater meaning, and achieve lastingrewards. There is only one way for you to achieve Success … your own way.
