From 1928 girls had equal suffrage with males. In 1945, the island of Taiwan was returned from Japan to China. In 1947, ladies received the suffrage beneath the Constitution of the Republic of China.
Similar provision was made for the Legislative Assemblies created for other bantustans. All adult colored citizens were eligible to vote for the Coloured Persons Representative Council, which was established in 1968 with restricted legislative powers; the council was nonetheless abolished in 1980. Similarly, all grownup Indian residents were eligible to vote for the South African Indian Council in 1981. In 1984 the Tricameral Parliament was established, and the proper to vote for the House of Representatives and House of Delegates was granted to all adult Coloured and Indian residents, respectively. Although legally entitled to vote, black girls had been successfully denied voting rights in quite a few Southern states until 1965.
