Last Tuesday, I was one of the lucky ladies in town to snag a ticket to the Forum for Women Entrepreneurs Garden Party – or #FWEGP as you twitter friends likely know it as. The event was held at the Vancouver Art Gallery’s roof top patio, which is absolutely beautiful, and the room was packed with successful men and women from all avenues of business within the city.
One of the best moments of the evening was listening to the always wonderful Peter Legge, CEO and Chair Canada Wide Media Ltd (and one of Canada’s most successful entrepreneurs), speak to the crowd about life, business, and of course, giving back.
Peter presented us with many poignant thoughts during his brief, witty and impactful speech, but one of my favourites was this: “Give back to the community infinitely more than you take out“. Peter, as most of us are aware of, certainly abides by this rule, and in 2008 was awarded British Columbia’s highest honour – The Order of B.C.
Another favourite quote of mine was when Peter reminded us all that the most valuable gift that we could give and receive is time. Whether this time is spent mentoring an individual, helping out a co-worker, lending an ear or shoulder to a friend, or even something as simple as waiting those extra five seconds to hold the door open for a stranger – we all benefit from giving as well as receiving time. It truly is our greatest gift, and I think we all could benefit from giving more of it.
After Peter’s remarks and a few introductions by the lovely Judy Brooks, interim FWE CEO, the mingling continued and I managed to meet some fascinating new people, and of course shared hugs with some old friends. The wine and food was fabulous – what more could you ask for at a party?!
I know. Swag.
Upon leaving, we were all presented with a beautifully packaged sample of cleanser, serum and moisturizer from Cherlyn Skincare. I’ve used all three products almost every day since and love that the ingredients are all natural! Now that’s what you call a party – phenomenal company, an inspiring speaker, delicious food and bevvies – and a beautifully packaged gift.
Thank you, FWE!
