Is Metro Vancouver becoming a “community of strangers?”

In June 2012, the Vancouver Foundation released a survey that found Metro Vancouver residents are “so close together, yet so far apart.” According to the survey, one in four say they are alone more often than they would like to be.  In the past year, only 23 per cent of people took part in a neighbourhood or community project, which indicates many residents are retreating from community activity and social interaction.

This decline in civic engagement had led to a breakdown of trust and the corrosion of caring attitudes, which has an effect on a neighbourhood’s collective ability to address issues such as bullying, homelessness and crime. So, what responsibility do local businesses have to help build strong and healthy communities?

Faye Wightman, president and CEO of the Vancouver Foundation, will present the results of the 2012 Metro Vancouver Survey on Connections and Engagement and participate in a discussion with audience members and Janet Austin, Chief Executive Officer, YWCA Metro Vancouver. The discussion will focus on how businesses can help people become connected and engaged.
