In the fifty plus years since the opening Save On Meats, that neon portly pig has been flying, attracting all walks of Vancouverites in for some home butchered goodness. And since Mark Brand (co-owner of nearby Sea Monstr Sushi & The Diamond), took over the reigns last year, the landmark (and the pig) have been taken to new heights after extensive renovations brought the diner back to the future. From their “Best Damn Ruben” to the in-house biscuits (no kidding, they mill Van Island grains in house), Save On Meats serves up the soulful classics with skill. For this Feed, their butcher-roots shine with a locally sourced nose-to-tail menu featuring Gelderman Farms. Chase your whole hog fix with a micro-brew provided by Victoria’s own Phillips Brewery. This might be your one shot to join the “pop-up” 40-seat communal table, but thankfully the pig out front is here to stay.
