Director of Communications + Engagement, Vancity
Karen Berkhout joined Vancity in May 2008, timed perfectly with the economic slowdown. This meant getting to work straightaway on many interesting projects that both reinforced her affinity for co-operatives as a business model and her desire to support local businesses. The Vancity Communications team manages external and internal communications, and integrated (financial and accountability) reporting. Prior to joining Vancity, Karen worked in a variety of roles including National Director of Communications with Montreal-based Microcell Telecom (Fido), her own sole proprietorship, and as a manager at Canadian Airlines, with a portfolio including national and international communications, crisis training and the merger and integration with Air Canada. Karen has also worked on the agency side of the ledger, with Karyo Communications and Robertson Pick Advertising. She has a strong background in business and broad experience in strategic planning, mergers and acquisitions, issues and crisis management, change management, leadership and employee communications and media relations.
